BG: How long have you been taking photographs professionally or unprofessionally?

BL: I’ve been taking photographs for about 12 years. What started as a hobby, capturing my kids’ events in grade school, grew into a passion and then a career. It led to the creation of BL Sports Photography and eventually SportzWire, my sportz media company, which I launched six months ago.

BG: What would you say is your photography style?

BL: My photography style is all about capturing sports action. I focus on freezing dynamic, meaningful moments that tell a story. I also strive to be unique, avoiding the standard shots and using creative cropping to make my photos stand out. There’s an art in capturing details that others might overlook.

BG: What or where do you most love to shoot?

BL: I love shooting sports, and soccer and football are my favorite. The energy and unpredictability of these games make them exciting to capture. Being right on the sidelines or under the hoop gives me the best perspective to preserve those special moments.

BG: What is your go-to camera/lens or any other recommended gear that is a must-have?

BL: My go-to setup is the Canon R5 Mark II paired with the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and the RF 100-500mm lens. The 70-200 is my favorite because it’s so versatile—it works for almost any sport and delivers sharp, crisp shots.

BG: What is one of the most exciting or exhilarating things you’ve done to capture a shot?

BL: Shooting a Division 1 basketball game was a thrilling experience. It tested my skills and gear in a high-energy environment. Using the Top Shelf bag during the game made it even better, as it allowed me to switch lenses quickly and stay in the moment.

BG: Who inspires you as a photographer?

BL: The athletes and their parents inspire me. Hearing how much the photos mean to them is incredibly rewarding and drives me to continue improving. Their reactions remind me why I love what I do.

BG: Do you have any advice for aspiring photographers?

BL: Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. Ask questions, learn from other photographers, and never hesitate to seek advice. Study the work of photographers you admire and use it as inspiration to develop your own style. Most importantly, enjoy the process, keep practicing, and stay committed to improving.

BG: What has your experience been like so far using the Top Shelf?

BL: At first, the Top Shelf bag felt unfamiliar—standing in my kitchen adjusting the straps, I thought something was missing. But once I loaded it up and used it at a Division 1 basketball game, I fell in love with it. By the end of the first period, I was confidently using it, and other photographers were asking me about it. The ease of access, the stability it provides for lens changes, and the ability to free up my hands were game-changing.

BG: Has the Top Shelf improved your photography or videography?

BL: Absolutely. The Top Shelf has completely changed the way I work. I no longer have to set my gear on the ground or struggle with quick lens changes. It makes me more efficient and allows me to focus on capturing the moment. It’s the perfect bag, and I’ve stopped searching for anything better. It’s become an essential part of my setup.
